Marina del Rey is an unincorporated Oceanside area and census-designated place within Los Angeles County. The population was 8,927 at the time of the 2010 census. The Fisherman's Village in the city offers a view of Marina del Rey's dominant feature as one of the primary small man-made boat harbors in the United States, with 20 marinas and a capacity for 5,450 boats. According to the Los Angeles Time, the harbor is ""perhaps the county's most valuable resource."" Marina del Rey covers a space including the area codes 424 and 310. Its ZIP code is 90292. Marina del Rey is near the mouth of the Ballona Creek, southeast of Venice and north of Playa del Rey. It is located just five miles north of LAX International Airport. The city is surrounded on all sides by the City of Los Angeles. The beach-style homes, the strip of land against the beach, and the beach itself west of the harbor, are all within the Los Angeles city limits, but they have a Marina del Rey address. The name of this strip technically is the Marina Peninsula. Via Dolce and the southern portion of Via Marina are the boundaries between the unincorporated area and L.A. City. Also according to the United States Census Bureau, Marina del Rey covers an area of 1.4 square miles. 0.9 of this is made up of land and the 0.6 square miles is water. The marina itself, a custom designed harbor with moorings for pleasure craft and small boats, is surrounded by expensive hotels, shops, restaurants, high-rise condos, and apartments. The area also includes the UCLA Marina Aquatic Center, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which regulates the Internet's address and domain name systems, and the USC Information Sciences Institute. The community is served by the three-mile Marina Freeway, which links Marina del Rey directly to Interstate 405 and neighboring Culver City. The racial breakdown of Marina del Rey is 80 percent Caucasian, 5.3 percent African-American, 9 percent Asian, 2 percent of people were from other races, and 6 percent were from two or more races. Hispanics and Latinos of any race make up 8 percent of the total population.
